Peer-to-Peer Networking


The Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Paradigm is a communication paradigm that tries to avoid any central entity in a network by useing efficiently the resources available at the end nodes of the network. The charakteristics of a Peer-to-Peer systems are:

  • Peers (=end-systems) form an overlay network
  • Peers offer and consume services and resources
  • Peers have significant autonomy
  • Self-organizing system
  • Services are exchanged between any participating peers

Important as well:

  • Heterogeneous peers
  • Permantent connectivity of individual peers cannot be assumed
    • e.g. support of dial-up users with variable IP addresses,
    • e.g. behind firewalls
    • e.g. operating outside the domain name system (DNS)

P2P became famous with file sharing applications like Napster, Gnutella, eDonkey, KaZaA, BitTorrent, etc. However, the application domain of the P2P paradigm is not limited to file sharing, as the example of Skype proves. At KOM we are looking into new application scenarios beyond file sharing.

Current Projects

  • QuaP2P: DFG Forschergruppe  "Verbesserung der Qualität von Peer-to-Peer-Systemen durch die systematische Erforschung von Qualitätsmerkmalen und deren wechselseitigen Abhängigkeiten" (FOR 733)
    This DFG Research Group researches systematically the quality of p2p systems. We have structured quality of p2p-systems into different quality aspects. We at KOM research the quality aspects adaptivity and efficiency. For our research results please see the publications of Aleksandra Kovacevic and Kalman Graffi.
  • EU Network of Excellence "CONTENT"
    Within this Network of Excellence we research new mechanisms for efficient p2p-based distribution of stored content. Our mechanism will enable BitTorrent like performance across different files. This allows combining the swarming mechanism know from BitTorrent with the long tail effect known from first and second generation p2p filesharing applicaitons. Further, smaller files will be distributed much more efficiently than compared to BitTorrent. Initial results are published here; further check Sebastian Kaune's page for recent updates.
  • EU SmoothIT
    This project aims at managing the enormous traffic created by p2p applications today. The approach we use to resolve this challenge is Economic Traffic Management. We try to achieve a win-win-win situation by creating situations where all stakeholders (ISPs, application providers, endusers) in a p2p application benefit from applying our mechanims.   • BMBF Premium Services
    The goal of this project is to research pricing strategies for commercial p2p applications. Most pricing schemes today are not appropriate for commercial p2p applications, as the availability of some information is assumed in order to calculate market prices. Therefore, we will focus on the development of a fully decentralised, efficient, but still secure auctioning mechanism for p2p system.
  • PeerfactSim.KOM
    PeerfactSim.KOM is a simulator for p2p system. We use and extend it continuously within all of our research projects.
