The peer-to-peer paradigm is well known from applications like Skype, Zattoo, Kazaa or BitTorrent. These "traditional" applications focus on direct person-to-person communication and lookup, video streaming or filesharing. However, the idea of peer-to-peer is not limited to these application areas.
One key benefit of peer-to-peer based applications is the low operation cost, a benefit that is desireable in various application areas with large-scale user basis. In the area of "New Generation of Peer-to-Peer Applications" we at KOM investigate new fields and applications for the peer-to-peer paradigm. By this, we gain a deeper understanding in the opportunities, challanges and benefits of the peer-to-peer paradigm.
One typical new application in that area are social online networks. Millions of users participate in a platform, exchanging information and maintaining their contacts. LifeSocial is a peer-to-peer based online social network, using the capacities of the peers to provide a multimedia-rich platform to meet and collaborate with friends. This work is motivated by the weak collaboration features in current web-based social online networks and the immense costs that they generate at the provider. LifeSocial.KOM, not only offers more features for totaly no costs for the provider, it is also secure. LifeSocial is secure, provides authenticated communication and access control. You as a user have the solely power about you data, privacy concerns are strictly considered.
