Web Technologies – Overview

The World Wide Web and the content, information and services provided by the Web encounters us in nearly every sector of life from private to business. It gains in importance more and more. Due to the increasing availability and bandwidth of internet connections and the increasing miniaturization of devices, web technologies becoming ubiquitous. The Web offers today numerous types of content, information and services. The Web, especially in form of social communities and communication services, becomes an additional place for peoples to interact.

The evolution of the Web and web technologies is very fast. Starting from Web of Content in the 90ties of the last century, over to the Web of Communication in the first decade of the current century. Presently the Web of Context arises. Research focusses on the Web of Things presently. Common resources in the Web are content, information, services, people and things.

Challenges arising from this fast evolution and the increasing amount of services and content are manifold. There is a need to specify, find, and retrieve appropriate content and services efficiently. Lifecycle management of content and services is very crucial. Users need quality assurance while using content and services.
