The facts are: "In the next few decades, a tremendous number of autonomous and networked systems will provide the most relevant (and usually hidden) computing capabilities for living and working together. In our global village, the heterogeneity of such ubiquitous communications devices and protocols would even increase. We as humans, must be able to make use of these new possibilities comfortably and really easily."

The challenges include: "Innovative quality of service mechanisms must be made available at access networks and at the edge of networks. Communication protocols should make use of the knowledge of data transmitted within their context of use. A plethora of networks results in the need for self organization mechanisms and context aware communications."
