Abstract: Considering the network security literature published recently, it can be described by the following characteristics: * Targeted group is in many cases computer scientists and system administrators * Underlying problems are described in great detail. Especially beginners face the problem that they have to select "their" solution from a great number of alternatives, as often the necessary basics are not described. Some books describe a lot of different alternatives how to attack networks. For the user it is often not transparent which possibilities exist to run networks with a satisfactory degree of security. The goal of the book is to explain approaches to a secure internet communication. In this context security mechanisms and the risk of their application are explained. We see the targeted group of readers as students (of computer science and electrical engineering) and other readers interested in security concepts in the internet. The book should be understood as basics which allow readers new to the field to understand the necessary ideas, as well as allow experienced users to find enough references to study special areas of internet security. We hence don't understand the book as a reference manual which describes for each security mechanism all technical details.
