Abstract: Mobile IP provides a framework for transparent host mobility in the Internet. This paper identifies the most important security related issues coupled to Mobile IP, mirroring the current and past development process in related IETF working groups. A short introduction on how Mobile IP works leads to a brief discussion of the integrated security mechanisms of Mobile IP. As special focus the integration of Mobile IP and IP Security (IPSec) is described and the related state-of-the-art architecture is presented and classified. Thereafter several outstanding security issues in the area of Mobile IP and the problems concerning Mobile IP and IPSec will be clarified. Summarizing, and to introduce ideas to make Mobile IP applicable for the future, I describe ongoing approaches in the field of authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA).
