Abstract: The development of connected vehicle applications can be reasonably supported with communication simulations. However, existing communication simulation models are more detailed than required for this use case. This introduces high complexity, resulting firstly in huge effort for parameter configuration and simulation scenario setup and secondly in a long simulation duration. To encounter these issues, we propose our heat-map based network simulation for Omnet++. It focuses on the transmission characteristics of technologies, rather than on network structure or intern technology processes. This makes it universal. The method maps transmission parameters on the location grid with configurable granularity, which can be designed efficiently in a graphical way. This model can increase productivity in the development process of connected vehicle applications due to easy configuration. Furthermore, the simulation execution time decreases by up to 500% in a typical connected vehicle scenario.
