Abstract:

Ubiquitous computing is starting a new era in the information age. Processors imbedded in the environment as well as a great number of arbitrary sensors supply extensive information and offer novel human-centred applications to the aid of the human being. With it, it has to be guaranteed that access to information and services is given only to authorized persons. Traditional approaches authorizing access to data and services require an active authentication carried out by the user and are based on the according principles “bearing something” or “knowing something“. This contradicts to the basic principles of the unobtrusiveness and human-centeredness in ubiquitous computing. Therefore, the known procedures are not usable within this field. The solution approach of this thesis is based on the contention that many applications and information in an open ubiquitous environment can be protected against abuse by using context information. The provision of extensive context information and the existence of space models are prerequisites, which is given in a ubiquitous environment. This thesis examines the terms “Context“, “Context information“ and “Context dependence“ in the literature of ubiquitous computing and carries out a classification, specification and modelling of context information. The model developed within the framework of this thesis for context-dependent secured access is introduced as well as a new language for the specification of context-dependent policies. The feasibility of this approach is shown by means of describing the developed prototype for context-dependent secured access and context infrastructure.
