In a lab exercise (Praktikum) students work on practice-oriented problems, gaining important insights into software, tools, and methodologies used in the field of communication networks. The scope of the lab lies on the design and implementation of software or hardware solutions to solve the given problem. Available tasks cover all research areas of KOM, including the design and implementation of protocols and applications for multimedia systems.

While the lab focuses on the software design and implementation part, a project (Projektseminar, Projektpraktikum) aims to provide a more scientific approach to solving the problem at hand. This includes an extensive literature review of existing approaches and, based on the review, carefully reasoned design decisions that lead to an implemented solution. Therefore, a project at KOM is considered a good preparation for a future bachelor or master thesis.

The Multimedia Communications Lab / Project is offered both in the summer and in the winter term. Students can choose from a wide variety of topics covering all research areas of KOM. All topics (lab and project) are introduced by the respective supervisor during a kickoff seminar at the beginning of each semester. Based on the scope and complexity of the task, it is offered either as lab or as project targeting bachelor or master students in electrical engineering and computer science.

Requirements

Students attending the lab or project should have prior experience in an object-oriented programming language such as Java. Lectures covering basic networking technologies and protocols (e.g., Communication Networks, Net Centric Systems) are also highly recommended. Individual tasks might have more specific requirements, which are stated in the task description.

Possible topics

The course deals with current development topics in the field of multimedia communication systems. In addition to a general overview, an in-depth look at a specific development area is provided. Topics are determined by the specific areas of work of the staff* and provide technical and introductory scientific skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Network and traffic planning and analysis
  • Performance evaluation of network applications
  • Discrete event-based simulation of network services
  • Protocols for mobile ad hoc networks / sensor networks
  • Infrastructure networks for mobile communications, Access Networks
  • Context-aware/aware communication and services
  • Peer-to-peer systems and architectures Distribution / and management
  • Web Service Technologies and Service-Oriented Architectures
  • AI-based Network Security & Routing

While we offer a joint kickoff as well as joint presentations for lab exercises and projects, there is still a major difference between both. While the lab focuses on software design and implementation, a project (project seminar, project internship) aims at a more scientific approach to solving the problem at hand.

Please note, that it depends on your course of studies as well as the rules defined by your examination office whether you are allowed to take a specific module. The descriptions below are solely suggestions - please contact your examination office if you are in doubt. The number of credits you will get for a specific module is also depending on your course of studies, we have no influence on credit allocation!

Since 2021, the Multimedia Communications Lab / Project is being held in moodle. Thus, if you register in TUCaN, you will be able to see the respective moodle course. If, for any reason, you have registered in TUCaN but you cannot join the moodle class, please contact us. All organizational information as well as the possibility to discuss the topics directly with the respective supervisors is provided during a kickoff meeting.
